"Born and raised under the wide Texas skies, I have long contemplated their larger-than-life symbolism. The skies typify the heavens—the dwelling of the gods, the place where angels soar and watch over us, the idea that the cosmos is much bigger than we know. They also characterize a sense of being grounded in the here and now. Rain or shine, the sky shapes our experience in tangible ways, and in ways that draw us closer to the divine. My work is a meditation on these perspectives, reconciling the spiritual with the physical realm. Influenced by realist landscapes, I am interested in depicting scenery that creates moments of quiet transformation for the viewer. Cloud forms are the subject matter of my compositions, with scruffy layers of oil paint in an array of calming hues rendering the luminosity, texture, and depth of a skyscape. These paintings are my personal way of wrestling heaven to earth, in an effort to satisfy a profoundly human urge to cherish life in the present, and to revere its transcendent meaning."
