BRIGHTER DAYS
Opening on July 23rd, Brighter Days is an expression on the long-anticipated (slow but steady) re-opening of the world, primarily the U.S.
The works on display balance nicely between a humorous and exuberant sentiment, with more eloquent undertones. All sentiments that the entire country can’t help but feel, now that normalcy has begun to creep once again into our lives.
A handful of pieces examine the publics’ mixed feelings about the aftermath of the virus, the vaccine, and the quick/mixed messaged reopening of the country, with a display of dark nuances with splashes of vibrant hues, and florescent neons.Thrush Holmes’ work unveils time-honored genres once so entangled by their own histories can live again. Between spraying wood panel with spray paint and neon, and carving out clever pockets on canvas, Thrush Holmes’ unapologetic methods elevate still lives, reclining nudes, and distorted animal figures from their traditional banality to culty, fetishistic status.
ABOUT THRUSH HOLMES
Thrush Holmes’ work unveils time-honored genres once so entangled by their own histories can live again. Between spraying wood panel with spray paint and neon, and carving out clever pockets on canvas, Thrush Holmes’ unapologetic methods elevate still lives, reclining nudes, and distorted animal figures from their traditional banality to culty, fetishistic status.
Confident and intuitive in his practice, Thrush Holmes’ spontaneous and experimental nature displays in-your-face imagery, from reclining nudes, matisse-like flowers, and poetic landscapes that contrast with a punk sensibility. His monumental “TH” initials, demonstrate an exuberant display of ego, machismo and expressionist bravado, contrary to his kind, soft spoken and tenacious personality. Holmes navigates magnificent concepts of biography, introspection, and materiality with all the sincerity of a scribbled cocktail napkin.
He explores traditional artistic themes, while channeling a more contemporary style, contrasting poetic expressions with an aggressive and unapologetically-punk sensibility. Entirely self-taught outside two weeks in art school - where he quit after being told he couldn’t fast-track to his final year - Holmes’ process mirrors his ambitions. 20-ft paintings are made in a single sitting, and the initials ‘TH’ are often large enough in the bottom corner of a piece to be considered a compositional element.
